I don't know if you've tried this route, but one thought if you're dead set on picking up a reman unit on the cheap is to try some of the large companies that specialize in selling remans like this

I've always bought used / imported so can't really comment on the quality of the builds, but they should be pretty good and come with some sort of warranty. Nice part with a reman is the turn around time vs. rebuilding.
Also you're in a great place since there should be a ton of these in Socal. I think places like Kragen etc source their shortblocks from companies like this and then just mark it up.
