Remember to be a competent Commander of a Competent paintball squad, you have to be up to the task and have excellent discipline. A commander must be VERY smart and must know where everyone is, what they are doing, and what they are going to do next, this means you've got to be smart calm and collected or else every tactic that you every try will come crashing down on your little ears. Commander is no pushover position. With it comes perhaps the most responsibility and restriction anywhere on the paintball field. Although many Commanders feel the need to get down and dirty, which is a VERY good thing to do, don't overdo it and try to act like a Dagger, because once you’re dead your team is screwed. Make sure though once a hotspot erupts that you get to a secure location to direct it, it's pretty hard to direct a 20 man fire-and assault team while being shot at.
All I’m saying is don't risk it your hide is worth a lot to the team.
1.Camoflauge, like all other members of your team you as well must be Camouflaged even if you do stay back most of the game. Some Commanders double as Snipers which isn't a bad idea, because if you can see the field you get better intelligence and better intelligence leads to better decisions and orders, which leads to a victory, so if you're a commander that likes playing sniper, get a ghillie suit.
If you're more of the Commander that lays back a bit get some Digi Camo or Woodland Mossy Oak breakup, it doesn't matter.
2.For your Commander's gun, if you play the sniper commander, by all means get the Longbow, if you can afford it, if not, you'll want something with long range, like a flatline or a teardrop, for sniping. A must have is also a scope, a powerful one, they're usually easier to access then your binoculars so use your scope! If you have the Longbow just mount it on, if not get an offset rail and mount it on that, (or else your hopper will get in the way) Either way if you play sniper as a Commander it shouldn't be for the kills but more for the intelligence side of it.
If you don't play sniper, get a Dagger like gun, something, small compact and rather fast shooting, I’ve never used one before but a pistol might be something worth trying out to, it might make you feel kind of 'cooler'. The best pistol that I could find was a Tac. 45. Brand spankin' new with, * round magazines these babies are quiet innovative with a 12 grain C02 canister placed inside the actual mag. You'll get some 24-30 shots out of Magazine so you can reload them when you need to. It's also about 1/2 the weight of any other paintball pistol on the Market right now and is blow-back pistol. Around 300 dollars for one.
Thanks Delta11 for the Pistol review on the Tac. 45.!
3.A commander shouldn't have any use for grenades at all, so don't bother with them, unless you're really intent on bringing them along, but since i should give you a solid opinion, don't bring any.
4.Once more like the rest of your team get some Gore-Tex boots, they're light-weight, breathable and waterproof they're some of the best boots out there, personally from my own experiences marching long distances and running in them is HEAVEN compared to actual combat boots.
5.If you're a sniper with a longbow carry a few extra clips, but other than that, go light on the ammo, a three pod carrier is fine and I can almost guarantee you won't run out of paint unless your game goes to hell in a hand basket and you're the only one left alive.
6.Mines are usually not needed unless you're obsessed with protecting your rear, and then you can set them up for flanking cover, or if your team needs you to bring a mine or two to quickly booby trap an important objective, don't worry about mines, they're useless to you.
7.RADIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You CANNOT live without it, I recommend a VERY high-end one, even get a military tactical radio if you can, even if your radio is a little large, you can easily set it up anywhere seeing as how you've got nothing else to carry. As for a headset try to get a multi directional one, so that it's easier to figure out where your team is, they work EXCELLENT, but remember as commander your radio is better than anything else you have, DON'T give away frq's or leave the freq changing sheet lying around when you move OP's.
ALSO:
1.Submitted by Bookworm, do NOT get a Motorola as they have a search feature and other teams can easily hack into your channel of communications.
2.Submitted by Ottoman98,It is a good idea to carry multiple radios, a nice set would be a; one that has access to the whole team, a multi directional earpiece is recommended for that, and one radio to talk to specific teammates that could be in trouble or out on their own, useful for communication with a lone wolf sniper that's been sent in. And finally a Police Radio, so that you can listen in on the other teams, even if their channels and radios are encrypted.
8.Binocualrs are usually a good idea to have, and so is a trench shovel or something... a commander can always work on camp defenses in his free time.
ALSO: Submitted By; Beach- A map or notebook can be especially useful if you're playing on a large field and keeping track of different squads is hard, notebooks can be useful too, not only to note what the OpFor's tendency’s are, but you can also use them to sketch up some on the field tactics.
9.BE SMART, remember your decisions can get your teammates "killed" and we definitely DON'T want that!
10.PHYSICAL CONDITION-A Commander can be in most any shape, although fit is a nice thing to have but other than that, as long as the man knows how to direct and run the team... HIRE HIM.
