Outlaw Paintball, is simply that, Paintball in non-designated areas. That means like your backyard or your neighbor’s forest, anywhere you can paintball, that doesn’t belong to a Paintball Corporation or Business is considered outlaw paintball. Some Outlaw Paintball is illegal, but most is completely legal. Outlaw Paintball is by far my FAVORITE type of paintball available, the course and boundaries can be miles wide and long making the game extremely intense and exciting, not knowing where the enemy is at any given time he can launch off a barrage at you. It simply represents combat in the best way possible, with infinite possibilities.
Although Outlaw paintball is fun there are some things that you’ll need before you go out to play Outlaw. Outlaw areas are usually miles of forest with very little recognizable terrain; therefore the chances of getting lost are severely higher than at a normal course. This really isn’t a good thing. So I’ll give you some recommendations for Outlaw Paintball on what to bring first off, and THEN what styles of play are effective for Outlaw.
First and Foremost bring a Knife, most types of good quality knife’s are acceptable. I usually carry a small Utility K-Bar, an HRT Boot Knife, and a Kershaw 3 ¼ Inch Folding knife as well as a standard WWII Combat K-Bar with me whenever I trek into the forest. Most Survival experts agree, you’re only as sharp as your knife. Take a good knife and know how to use it.
Another thing you’ll want is a pack of some sort, a hunting pack most likely, camouflaged as well. You’ll be carrying quite a few things and a good pack can help you carry it.
Next on the list are some Rations. I like to carry 6 MRE’s or two days worth of food, and Water Purification tablets as well as a portable heating stove. This combination works well and MRE’s are top quality and one could even get by on only 2 MRE’s a day, which totals out to 3 Days with food. At the moment though, MRE’s are in scarce supply as most are being sent to Iraq and Louisiana.
Good Boots. You’ll have this in normal play as well but in Outlaw this is even more important as the terrain could be ten times harsher, you simply don’t know, better safe than sorry.
A Sleeping Bag. A Sleeping Bag is quite essential for survival; it keeps you warm and comfortable throughout the night and keeps you from freezing to death, a small one can be easily hitched on the end of your pack.
Another good thing to have is a windbreaker or light coat, even if it’s the summer, things can get cold at night and Gore-Tex is the best way to go from freezing your rear end off.
Those are some basic things to have when you go Outlaw, sometimes Outlaw games are short, sometimes longs, and sometimes, (Worst Case) you get lost and separated these things become essential for your survival. I’ve been in Outlaw games that have lasted for up to Three days and ALL of these things came in handy as our team of 12 Moved throughout the forest to assault the Red Team. Those games are the best ones to play, you’re always venerable, and it really keeps you on edge thinking that at any time on the night a storm of paint could fly in and takes you out in your sleep. (On a Side-Note when you’re doing this we wear glasses when we’re moving around camp and stuff or eating drinking, or cooking or sleeping instead of our masks, not the safest but both teams know enough not to aim at the head.)
When in Outlaw play Recon is the best skill to have, being able to find the enemy is simply essential to your survival. Have a good Dagger and good men up front that are able to find the enemy, once you find them and get in position the games practically over.
Since you’re on your edge for 8 hours plus make sure you stay properly hydrated and nurtured for the game or days of paintball, if not you could be out for a while on stress and fatigue, Three MRE’s a day will keep even the roughest man alive during combat, so stick with them, and eat them a lot.
