This is my first article for Orange County Mobile Infantry and although I am the tactics reporter I thought I would start off writing about one of the most commonly made mistakes (yes even the vet's do it) in the game of paintball.
In the wonderful world of paintball everything is known by the same name. Camouflage. Camouflage is actually defined as "Fabric or a garment dyed in splotches of green, brown, tan, and black so as to make the wearer indistinguishable from the surrounding environment." Which in "Lame-Man's terms means that you are colored with natural colors to make yourself, dare I say it, "invisible". What the problem with this is that this covers all BDU's yes including MARSAP and Tiger Stripe, but everyone needs to understand that woodland, mossy break up, and (some) ghillie suits are not camouflage, but mimicry.
Mimicry is the resemblance of one organism to another or to an object in its surroundings for concealment and protection from predators. That means that you are pretending to be something your not, like a pile of leaves for example is what some ghillie suits are designed to disguise you as. With Mossy Oak and woodland "camos" you are being disguised as the natural woodland carpeting, leaves sticks, and dirt. These are two very different things and yet they are both in most people's eyes identically effective. So the next time someone sees your ghillie smack him upside the head.....No, Just kidding but I hope you found this first article informative.
I'll See you next time
